Being involved in an auto accident can be stressful. Being prepared in the event that you will be involved in one can help reduce stress and provide correct information to law enforcement, your insurance company, and/or your injury attorney should as your situation warrants.

What to do after an auto accident:

  1. Remain Calm

  2. Check for injuries. If injuries were sustained as a result of the accident, call 911 immediately. If you or your passenger(s) are seriously injured, DO NOT MOVE.

  3. If the accident is minor and there are no serious injuries, move the cars to a safe place out of the way of traffic.

  4. If you have flares, triangles or traffic cones, consider using them to keep oncoming traffic clear of your accident scene.

  5. Contact law enforcement.

  6. Make specific notes about the accident. Obtain name, driver's license and insurance information of the other driver. Make sure you obtain make and model of the other driver's vehicle. Take notes regarding the facts of the accident. Obtain witness names and contact information if available.

  7. Be polite. Do not make accusatory claims to the other driver, and do not claim fault for the accident. State the facts that you know, and only the facts.

  8. Take photos of the accident scene including accident location and damage to both vehicles.

  9. Contact your insurance company immediately.

  10. Do not leave the scene of the accident until the police and other driver leaves.
